Preparing your Piezography Charcoal prints
Piezography Charcoal printing is an achromatic black and white process that offers one of the deepest black densities (Dmax) possible and allows you to obtain a very wide range of grey tones.
You have the possibility to give a tone to your images (neutral, cold, warm, warmer) that you can use on our whole range of supports from classic baryta to Japanese papers. Please note that the natural colour of the paper chosen (white, creamy white, warm white, etc.) will also affect the final result. You will have to choose the tone of the black and white print associated with the natural shade of the paper.
For this, if you are not familiar with or do not wish to use the screen simulation technique with our ICC profiles, we recommend that you prepare your Piezography Charcoal prints using an iterative mode:
- You make a first test print in small format.
- You receive the print and make a judgment of the rendering.
- Once the corrections have been made, you make a new test print and continue in this way until you are satisfied.
Don't forget to keep the history of your corrections (for example by saving a settings layer in Adobe Photoshop) so that you can go back or reproduce the print later and better understand the results obtained.
The four tones offered: Cool, Neutral, Warm, Warmer.
Using our ICC profiles dedicated to Piezography Charcoal
If you are familiar with screen simulation with ICC profiles, we provide you with our ICC profiles dedicated to Piezography Charcoal so that you can preview the final rendering for each paper and each tone.
Important: Our Piezography Charcoal ICC profiles are designed only for previewing the final rendering of your print on your monitor, they are not usable for conversion. For specific printing in Piezography Charcoal, we have chosen a printing software that performs a linearisation (adjustment of the quantity of ink) that we can adapt precisely to each desired paper/tonality pair.
However, unlike standard colour or black and white printing software, this specific software does not separate the linearisation and characterisation present in an ICC profile.
To simplify, the ICC profile already contains settings from the printing software, if you convert your image with the ICC profile, at the time of printing these settings will be applied a second time to your image with a disappointing result that does not correspond to your screen display.
Preview on your screen with a Piezography Charcoal ICC profile
Your image should be left in its colour space with its original ICC profile or the one of your choice in RGB. The proof simulation function in Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom can be used to preview the final result.
